Katahdin Australian Shepherds is a holistic breeding program founded in the beautiful state of Maine in 1999.  In the fall of 2005 we relocated to the tropical island of Puerto Rico.  We frequently travel to New England and other regions to compete with our dogs and welcome inquiries from around the world.  Our kennel is named after one of our first Australian Shepherds and a mountain in Maine, Mount Katahdin.  We are the proud breeders of healthy and correct Australian Shepherds.  Here, health of the mind, body and spirit come first.

 


We are a small, yet highly successful breeding program.  Since our dogs are part of our family - they live in our home, not in kennels or runs. Keeping the number of dogs who live with us reasonable, resonates with our belief in doing the most we can, with and for each of our dogs.  All of our dogs are active in various venues along with being our cherished family members.

Our Australian Shepherds are raised on a raw diet with minimal vaccinations and  receive holistic healthcare.   We use Herbs, Flower Essences, Homeopathy and Chiropractic care in conjunction with our Natural Rearing regimen to build a foundation of true health for our dogs.  We strongly believe that the importance we place in our dogs' health and well-being will be evident as each generation is healthier with a stronger immune system and Vital Force. 

Although we put a great deal of trust in our holistic approach, we maintain a high understanding of the importance of genetics and their role.  Keeping that in mind, we never lose sight of the Breed Standard and responsible breeding practices.




Our Australian Shepherds are registered with both AKC & ASCA and we have several that are also registered with both FCI & CKC as well - depending on their geographical location.   Our breeding stock has a yearly eye clearance by a board certified Canine Ophthalmologist and an OFA or Penn-Hip rating before being bred.  Our breeding stock is also DNA profiled, MDR-1 tested and HSF4 tested prior to being bred.  As new genetic testing becomes available for our Breed - it will become mandatory testing for all KAS breeding stock.  We are in constant pursuit of current research regarding the health and genetics of the Australian Shepherd.
